Vluchtelingen welkom, racisme niet!
Veel mensen zijn op de vlucht voor verschrikkelijke oorlogen, armoede en onderdrukking, maar Pegida misbruikt deze tragedie om angst en haat te zaaien tegen hele bevolkingsgroepen. Ze roept op om op 6 februari in Amsterdam te demonstreren tegen 'de islamisering van Europa'. Dit in dezelfde maand dat we ook de februaristaking herdenken 75 jaar geleden.

De hetze tegen vluchtelingen is in verschillende steden al uitgemond in bekladdingen, brandstichtingen en aanvallen op asielzoekerscentra en raadsvergaderingen. Haatzaaiers grijpen incidenten aan om alle vluchtelingen als gevaarlijk af te schilderen.

Daartegenover staat dat een grote meerderheid van de bevolking vindt dat ook wij in Nederland een bijdrage moeten en kunnen leveren aan de opvang van vluchtelingen. Door heel Nederland hebben duizenden mensen geholpen met het inzamelen van spullen of hebben zich opgegeven als vrijwilliger om vluchtelingen bij te staan.

Maar indien we onze stem niet verheffen tegen de haat en het racisme die organisaties zoals Pegida verspreiden, staan we toe dat hun ideeën terrein winnen en onze samenleving vergiftigen. We mogen niet toestaan dat ze mensen tegen elkaar opzetten.

Daarom roepen we op tot een kleurrijke demonstratie waarmee we op 6 februari in Amsterdam een tegengeluid laten horen. Wij willen geen haat in onze straat. Een andere politiek is mogelijk: een politiek die mensen samenbrengt in plaats van tegen elkaar uitspeelt.

Refugees welcome, racism is not!
Many people are presently fleeing terrible wars, poverty and oppression, however, Pegida is abusing this tragedy to sow hate and fear against entire communities. They are calling for a demonstration on February 6 in Amsterdam against the ‘Islamization of Europe’. This is taking place in the same month that we commemorate the February strike, 75 years ago.

The smear campaign against refugees has already resulted in hate graffiti, arson and attacks against refugee centers and municipal council meetings.

Such sowers of hate exploit individual incidents in order to portray all refugees as being dangerous.

In contrast, a large majority of the population considers that also here in the Netherlands, we can and must contribute to providing a safe haven for refugees. Throughout the Netherlands, thousands of people helped to collect supplies or offered to assist refugees as a volunteer.

But unless we raise our voices against the hate and racism which organizations such as Pegida are spreading, we would permit their ideas to gain ground and poison our society.

We therefore call for a multi-cultural demonstration on February 6 in Amsterdam, in order to counter their voices. We do not want hate in our streets. A different political course is possible: a course which brings people together instead of setting communities up against each other.
