[Utrecht] Far-right feminism: the events of Cologne

KSU/Basta presents a reading and discussionevening on the events in Cologne on New Year's Eve and the response to it in society and the media.

The numerous sexual assaults against women on the night of New Year’s Eve in Cologne and other German cities have sparked a big debate in the last months. Unfortunately the argument has been hijacked by the far-right, distorted and used to justify the anti-immigration agenda. The discussion revolves around hatefully attacking immigrants and European muslims rather than the effective measures for the victims of sexual assault.

Let's refocus the discussion! Are the events of Cologne used as an excuse for more violence? What do racism and islamophobia have to do with feminism? Join us for this interesting talk and discussion!

Speakers:

  • Mariam El Maslouhi, anti-racism and human rights activist and author.
  • Berna Toprak, junior editor at Women Inc, focusing on the position of women and diversity in Dutch society.
