Begrip over de historische achtergrond van stadsontwikkeling en hoe we onze dagelijks politieke engagement kunnen verrijken door middel van architectuur.

Architectuur is veelzijdig en door en door politiek: het creëert en verdeelt de ruimtes waar we onze dagelijkse levens leven en vormt wie we zijn; het verplaatst enorme hoeveelheden natuurlijke bronnen, met impact op het climaat; het is nauw verbonden met de bouwsector (een of de sterkste economische factoren wereldwijd); het vermengt publieke en private belangen; het gebruikt informatie technologie aan de basis; het is gebaseerd op vooringenomen argumentatie.

Deze veelzijdige samenstelling van onze geurbaniseerde wereld wordt steeds meer gereguleerd waarbij er gezocht wordt naar democratisering van dit proces: top-down, met het instellen van zone-wetten over grondverdeling en bottom-up in de vorm van mede-ondewikkeling waarbij burgers betrokken worden in het besluitvormingsproces. Beide aanpakken zijn verre van effectief, de eerste is niet in staat om corruptie te voorkomen; de laatste blijft langzaam en duur in toepassing.

In deze lezing en discussie kijken we naar de historische ontwikkeling en relatie tussen architectuur en politiek, van de rol van stadspleinen tot de technologische doorbraken als BIM (Building Information Modeling), en kijken we waar we naartoe gaan (en heen willen).

Understand the historical background of cityplanning and how we can enhance daily political engagement via architecture.

The practice of architecture is multi-faceted and deeply political: It creates and divides spaces where we live our everyday lives in and shapes who we are, it allocates vast amounts of natural resources with climate change implications, it is embedded in the construction sector, (one of the strongest economic developers worldwide), it mingles public and private interests, it uses IT at its core, it is fashionable and it is based on biased reasoning. Such multi-faceted condition of the urbanized world has been increasingly regulated on the search for a democratic process: Top-down, with the creation of zoning laws, and bottom up, with co-design schemes involving citizens in the decision process. Both approaches are far from effective, the former is unable to avoid corruption; the later remains of punctual and of expensive application.

In this talk/discussion, let us look into the historical development of the relationship between Architecture and Politics, from the role of city squares till the the technological breakthroughs such as BIM (Building Information Modeling) and distill where we are heading to.
